Update: Sketch Synth v1.0.2 Released – Adds 64 New Sounds With 4 Different FX Layouts!
Shape of Sound has released version 1.0.2 of Sketch Synth FX – their universal app that let’s you draw effects onto your sounds, layer by layer using it’s XY pads. The update adds 4 new sound banks including 64 new sounds, each bank with it’s own FX layouts.
“In the past every FX layout was the same, you moved from left to right through pitch, low pass filter, high pass filter, distortion, chorus, delay and then importantly to a volume / bypass pad. In the new FX layouts the pitch and bypass pads are always there but there are now new effects like more detailed delay, reverb, bit crusher, hard limiter & compression. Each new pad is now just themed visually with new sounds, but also has new FX layouts as well. For instance once of my favourites is the new Explosives pad, it has 18 different explosive sounds that you can adjust 4 different delay parameters, 4 different reverb parameters and a low pass filter with LFO on in order to turn a single explosive sound into a whole bombing party.
Another of the new pads is called warmer, the previous pads in Sketch Synth FX varied between dark, light and urban, this time it was important to have something a bit warmer and so it contains 18 much warmer samples, and it’s FX allow you to work in detail with the chorus, reverb and compression settings to warm up your sound.
If soft vintage sounds aren’t your thing then there is always Jagged Edge, this pad contains heavy bass and murky sounds that benefit from a tight set of distortion effects. On the menu is compression, followed by hard limiting, followed by a bit crusher then a gated distortion effect, last a little reverb is applied to give a metallic finish. This one is definitely aimed less at fuzzy overdrive and more at metallic sheen.
Lastly there is the noise pad which has 18 different noise types and then a diverse set of effects. Starting with a high pass filter, then gated distortion, reverb, a screaming chorus feedback system and lastly wobble it is possible to create some really quite bizarre sounds with this one from foot steps, to screams, to running water, to explosions.”
The App is described as awesome (4/4) by the iPad music apps magazine Apps4idevices. They have a review and video which act as a great starting point for letting you see how cool a product this is:
Best support is on devices with dual core CPUs: iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPhone 4S, on older devices it is restricted and not as good.
Sketch Synth FX lets you draw effects onto your sounds, layer by layer using it's XY pads. Simply work from the sample input at the left, through the effects channels and to the output at the right. You always work on samples/recordings, Sketch Synth FX messes around with your samples, what it is not is a guitar amp (although you can record your guitar with it, I recommend using a separate record with input level monitoring and then using Audio Copy and Paste to copy the sample across).
You can record and export using Audio Copy & Paste (Sonoma not intua yet) or iTunes File Sharing. The effects you can apply include: delay, distortion, low/high pass filter, pitch, chorus. The effects can come on pretty strong and so you have a bypass control that really helps smooth chaotic effects into nicer evolving sounds.
This version comes with 3 themes / sample packs, including one sample pack from DJ Vadim.
Best support is on devices with dual core CPUs: iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPhone 4S. On older devices you will notice that measures have been taken to restrict recording length and lack of cpu can mean layering multiple effects together can cause audio clicks and crackles, also recording takes time to save as well. I wanted initially to take it off the app store for these single core devices; but it is not possible now it is up, so I will being working to bring a whole new load of low cpu effects instead.
Sketch Synth FX also comes with Sketch Synth 3D and Sketch Sound 3D now, so if you have one of those then make sure you get the latest updates and you'll get this automatically (albeit with fewer samples).
